Progressive Christian Clergy Win Key 2026 US Election Races
Progressive Christian clergy members won several key legislative seats in Texas, Kansas, and Iowa during the 2026 US elections.
Several progressive Christian clergy members won key legislative races in traditionally conservative states during the 2026 US elections. In Texas, James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, won in a landslide victory after running on a platform that challenged the systems making charity necessary.
In Kansas, the Rev Adam Hamilton, a moderate pastor who established an open and affirming congregation for gay members, was elected to the Senate. This victory marks the first time a Democrat has won the seat since 1932. Meanwhile, Iowa elected two progressive pastors, Presbyterian Lindsay James and Lutheran Shane Trone Garriott, to its Congressional delegation.
These candidates focused on a progressive spirit centered on education, social safety nets, and the vulnerable, promoting a vision of Christianity based on inclusivity. The victories occurred despite opposition from Republican candidates and conservative evangelical leaders. JD Vance specifically accused Hamilton of insulting the faith during the campaign.
