Kemi Badenoch Warns of Civil Unrest Over Immigration Reforms
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch warned that failing to tighten border controls and citizenship laws could lead to France-style civil unrest in the United Kingdom.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch warned that the United Kingdom faces potential civil unrest similar to recent riots in France if the government fails to tighten border controls and make British citizenship more difficult to obtain. Speaking at a press conference, Badenoch admitted the previous Conservative government erred by allowing too many people into the country who now qualify for indefinite leave to remain.
The debate centers on proposals by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to extend the residency requirement for indefinite leave to remain from five years to 10 years, with some plans suggesting as many as 15 years for foreign care workers. Badenoch urged Mahmood to resist pressure from Labour party rebels, warning that if the Home Secretary is weak, the country will see more problems.
Internal Labour tensions have emerged over these reforms, with Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh arguing that extending the wait for permanent residency threatens social cohesion. However, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner denied reports of a Cabinet rift and expressed full confidence in Mahmood's strategy, citing an increase in deportations and the prevention of 48,000 small boat crossings since 2024.
Separately, Badenoch criticized Andy Burnham's efforts to bring Britain closer to the European Union. She characterized the prospect of rejoining the bloc as a massive distraction and cited political instability in Germany and violent riots in France as evidence against the benefits of the EU.
