Kristi Noem Transitions to State Department Senior Adviser Role
Kristi Noem has ended her tenure as Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas and transitioned to a senior adviser role at the State Department.
The United States Department of State confirmed that Kristi Noem has ended her tenure as Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas, a coalition of Caribbean and Latin American countries focused on regional security, counternarcotics, and countering Chinese influence. While a State Department official noted her envoy status expired last month, Noem stated the role was always a six-month appointment.
Noem has transitioned to her third role within the administration, serving as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. In this capacity, she will continue her work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tommy Piggott confirmed the personnel change, stating such shifts are common in these positions.
Noem's trajectory in the administration has been volatile. President Donald Trump removed her as Secretary of Homeland Security in March 2026 following a congressional hearing regarding a $220 million advertising campaign and controversies involving FEMA and fatal immigration operation shootings. Trump subsequently appointed her as special envoy to the coalition before her recent transition to the State Department advisory role.
