US Treasury Bond Yields Spike Amid Rising Inflation

US Treasury bond yields hit near 24-year highs after consumer inflation exceeded expectations, triggering a broad stock market sell-off.

US Treasury bond yields rose to 5.31%, reaching levels not seen since 2002, after a September consumer inflation report showed an annualized price increase of 3.7%. This figure surpassed both the 3.4% growth recorded in August and economist projections of 3.6%.

Donald Trump faces increased economic pressure as the bond sell-off triggered declines across the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq 100. The volatility comes weeks before midterm elections, complicating the president's efforts to maintain affordable borrowing costs.

To stabilize the market, the United States Department of the Treasury implemented a $6 billion bond buyback plan in September to add liquidity. Despite this effort, yields continued to climb. Investors now expect the Federal Reserve System to implement at least one more interest rate hike before the end of the year to combat persistent inflation.
