Gender Minister Nominee Yong Hye-in Withdraws Candidacy

Gender minister nominee Yong Hye-in withdrew her candidacy on Sunday following public backlash and pressure from the ruling Democratic Party. The controversy centered on Yong's refusal to vacate her parliamentary seat as a member of the Basic Income Party, a decision that contradicted the established custom for proportional representation lawmakers entering the cabinet.

A Gallup Korea survey showed that 61% of respondents viewed Yong as unqualified for the role. In her decision to step down, Yong noted that it would be difficult to effectively fulfill the role of a bridge between the government and the National Assembly when even the ruling party expressed concerns.

The withdrawal represents a setback for President Lee Jae Myung, whose approval rating has fallen to 38% following a cabinet reshuffle designed to appeal to younger voters and restore public support. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that the office respects the decision, noting that the nominee acted to minimize the burden on state affairs and people's livelihoods.
