Nigeria Economy Grows 4.43 Percent in Second Quarter

Nigeria's economy grew at its fastest pace in five years during the second quarter, driven by high crude prices and oil sector expansion.

The economy of Nigeria grew at an annual rate of 4.43 percent in the second quarter, marking the fastest growth pace the country has seen in five years. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, this expansion exceeded economist expectations of 4.2 percent and rose from 3.89 percent in the previous quarter.

An oil sector expansion of 7.31 percent drove the growth, as crude prices averaged 93 dollars a barrel. These prices were pushed higher by supply constraints resulting from the United States' war with Iran. Oil output increased to a daily average of 1.72 million barrels, which subsequently increased demand for products from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals FZE.

The non-oil sector also grew by 4.31 percent, supported by the agriculture and telecommunications industries. However, these gains occur alongside high poverty levels and inflation. President Bola Tinubu may use the positive GDP data to justify his policies of currency liberalization and the removal of fuel subsidies as the January elections approach.
