India and Indonesia Finalize BrahMos Missile Battery Agreement

India and Indonesia have finalized a deal for BrahMos missile batteries to strengthen coastal deterrence in the South China Sea.

The Government of India and the Government of Indonesia have finalized a long-discussed agreement for the sale of BrahMos missile batteries. This deal makes Indonesia the third Southeast Asian nation to acquire the high-speed anti-ship missile system, following the Philippines and Vietnam. The acquisition is intended to create a distributed network of coastal deterrence capable of threatening naval movements in the South China Sea, allowing regional powers to increase the cost of Chinese maritime operations.

Indian envoy Sandeep Chakravorty noted that discussions reached an advanced stage prior to the finalization. The deal coincides with a broader diplomatic push, including a visit to India by President Prabowo Subianto early in his term and an upcoming visit to Indonesia by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to further bilateral momentum.

Beyond defense, India is pursuing expanded investment in Indonesia to support a downstreaming strategy for processing natural resources such as nickel, coal, and gold locally. Additionally, India has agreed to support the restoration of the Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
