Samuel Alito Will Remain on Supreme Court Through 2027
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito announced he will not retire during the upcoming lame-duck session and intends to serve through the current term.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito announced he intends to remain on the court through at least the end of the current term in late June or early July 2027. He explicitly ruled out retiring during the upcoming lame-duck session of Congress, regardless of the outcome of the November midterm elections and whether Democrats regain majority control of the Senate.
Alito acknowledged that he has considered retirement due to his age, but stated he does not feel "mentally or physically decrepit." The timing of his decision is politically significant because a Democratic Senate majority could block future nominees appointed by President Donald Trump.
As one of six conservative justices on the Supreme Court of the United States, Alito's presence on the bench maintains the current judicial balance during a period of high political volatility surrounding the midterm elections.
