Trump Administration Suspends 870,000 Borrowers Over Pandemic Fraud

Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday that the Trump administration has permanently suspended nearly 870,000 borrowers from future Small Business Administration (SBA) loans and agency programs. These individuals are linked to an estimated $39 billion in suspected pandemic-era fraud across 45 states and territories, raising the nationwide total of suspended borrowers tied to suspected fraud to $49 billion.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler reported that the agency referred $22 billion in suspected fraudulent loans to the Treasury Department for collection this summer. The agency is also launching Operation No Doze in Missouri and Kansas to recover funds. These actions follow inspector general estimates that over $200 billion of the $1.2 trillion distributed via the Paycheck Protection Program and COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs showed signs of potential fraud.

Simultaneously, the United States Department of Justice concluded Operation Heartland Surge, a nationwide enforcement effort. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the operation resulted in actions against more than 160 defendants and approximately $245 million in intended losses, including a single criminal case involving nearly $56 million.
