ICC Defies U.S. Sanctions to Continue War Crimes Probes

The International Criminal Court continues its global investigations and issues Taliban arrest warrants despite sanctions imposed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The International Criminal Court is insulating its operations from sanctions imposed by the United States this month. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures after labeling the tribunal a rogue court and demanding it cease threats against American citizens.

Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan stated that investigations into the Gaza war and other situations continue. While the court is negotiating with the European Union for protection and replacing Microsoft software with European alternatives, some staff are already experiencing banking difficulties. This occurs ahead of the official six-month grace period ending in April 2027, as banks over comply with the new restrictions.

Despite these pressures, the court recently unsealed four arrest warrants against Taliban members for gender persecution. The institution is simultaneously recovering from the July removal of former chief prosecutor Karim Khan, who denied allegations of sexual harassment.
