Trump Waives Diesel Tax Rules to Lower Fuel Costs

Donald Trump authorized the Internal Revenue Service to waive recordkeeping requirements for red-dyed diesel to reduce fuel costs for farmers and truck operators.

The Donald Trump administration is waiving recordkeeping and reporting requirements for tax-exempt red-dyed diesel to encourage farmers, truck-stop operators, and other companies to purchase the cheaper fuel. This move follows a presidential directive to expand the sale of dyed diesel, which is typically reserved for off-road use, as a method to lower fuel costs for consumers without requiring congressional approval ahead of the November midterm elections.

The Internal Revenue Service is expected to issue formal guidance providing temporary relief from these requirements. The agency will not challenge temporary failures to meet filing or reporting standards for taxable uses of dyed diesel between October 1, 2026, and January 1, 2027. Furthermore, the agency will not assert civil penalties or additional taxes related to this directive.

The effort comes as national diesel prices average approximately $6.32 per gallon. These high costs are driven by refining capacity losses resulting from ongoing conflicts in Russia and the Middle East.
