White House Cites Record Crime Drop Amid Trump's Rhetoric

The White House claims President Donald Trump has delivered the largest decrease in violent crime in American history. FBI Crime Data Explorer statistics show reported violent crime fell 9% from June 2025 through May 2026, with the steepest declines occurring in robbery and murder.

Despite these national trends, Donald Trump described North Carolina as "one of the most violent" states and "one of the worst in the whole nation" during a September 16 campaign rally in Gastonia. This rhetoric contradicted data released by the White House and state records, which showed North Carolina's violent crime dropped 5.8% compared to 2025, with murders falling 12.4% and robberies 17.7%. While the White House credited the president's law-and-order agenda, data indicates the decline began before he took office.

Comedian Bill Maher argued on HBO's "Real Time" that Trump's "badass" persona and tough-on-crime image act as a deterrent to criminals. Maher attributed the crime drop to a combination of Trump's image, the expansion of the Democratic safety net, and surveillance technology. He also noted a decline in overdose deaths resulting from a mix of law enforcement efforts and Narcan access established under former President Joe Biden.

Other data provides a more complex view. A Council on Criminal Justice analysis found that while homicide and robbery declined in 36 large cities, shoplifting, sexual assault, and domestic violence increased. Similarly, North Carolina reported increases in extortion, weapons violations, and domestic violence.
