Trump Creates National Fraud Division Targeting Minnesota Welfare Schemes

President Donald Trump established a National Fraud Enforcement Division and froze $10 billion in state funding following an alleged $9 billion welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota.

President Donald Trump announced the creation of a National Fraud Enforcement Division within the Department of Justice to combat the misuse of federal taxpayer funds. The initiative includes a new Senate-confirmed assistant attorney general position who will operate out of the White House and report directly to Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Senate Majority Leader John Thune promised a swift confirmation process for the nominee.

The effort initially targets a welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota, where federal prosecutors estimate losses up to $9 billion through shell companies posing as daycare centers and food programs. The Department of Justice has issued over 1,750 subpoenas and charged nearly 100 defendants. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent further launched initiatives in Minnesota, utilizing the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to investigate funds allegedly transferred to the al Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia.

Concurrent with these probes, the administration froze $10 billion in child care and social services funding for five states, including Minnesota, California, New York, Illinois, and Colorado. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended the freeze as a measure to ensure resources reach poor families. In response, the targeted states filed a lawsuit alleging the freeze is unlawful.

Vice President JD Vance called for the resignation of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, accusing him of incompetence or complicity. While Walz announced he would not seek re-election, he refused to resign and disputed the $9 billion fraud estimate. The tension coincides with a fatal ICE agent shooting in Minneapolis, which Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized as an act of domestic terrorism by a left-wing network.
