Iran Shoots Down US Drone as Russia Seeks Mediation

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down a US MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz while Russia offered to mediate the escalating conflict.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed on October 20, 2026, that it shot down a United States MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the 54th US military drone the group claims to have destroyed since the conflict began in February with US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Tensions remain high after Iran rejected a US response to its proposal to reopen the strategic waterway, citing inadequate terms regarding sanctions and maritime access.

Simultaneously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Tehran to discuss regional developments and offer Moscow's assistance in mediation. Lavrov stated the efforts were "aimed at preventing the return of a large-scale war" following an offer from President Vladimir Putin to help resolve the stalled talks between Tehran and Washington.

During a joint press conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States and Israel of causing insecurity in the region. Araghchi claimed that the "war imposed by the United States and the Zionist regime (Israel), combined with the economic blockade, constitutes the principal source of insecurity" in the Strait of Hormuz. While a ceasefire was reached in April and a memorandum of understanding signed in June, hostilities persist as Iran targets unauthorized vessels and the United States maintains a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
