Democrats Flip Texas in Historic 2026 Election Sweep

Democrats ended decades of Republican dominance in Texas by winning the governorship, the state House, and multiple statewide offices in the 2026 midterm elections.

Democrats captured nearly every high-profile seat in Texas during the 2026 midterm elections, ending over three decades of Republican control. Gina Hinojosa ousted Governor Greg Abbott, while Vikki Goodwin defeated Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. Democrats also won the attorney general's race with Nathan Johnson, a U.S. Senate seat with James Talarico, and flipped control of the Texas House of Representatives.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, the only statewide elected Republican remaining in Texas, described the results as a "blue tsunami" and a "Watergate-level repudiation." Cruz attributed the losses to a national rejection of MAGA policies, specifically citing the war in Iran and tariffs as drivers of rising costs for insurance, gas, and food.

Internal Republican friction emerged following the defeat. Travis County GOP chair Andy Hogue blamed a combative approach and messaging failures, while candidate Don Huffines criticized Abbott and Patrick for seeking fourth terms. Donald Trump reportedly labeled Abbott a "RINO" after the governor's loss. Republicans maintained a 19-12 majority in the Texas Senate, their sole remaining foothold in the state legislature. The new Democratic leaders will take office in January, with the Texas Legislature convening on January 12.
