Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Sparks Debate Over Gender Roles

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sparked a national debate after claiming domestic chores and grooming requirements add several hours to her daily workload compared to male predecessors.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sparked a national debate during a budget hearing on Wednesday after stating she spends three to four more hours daily on household chores and grooming than her male predecessors. Takaichi explained that tasks such as cooking, bathing, and applying makeup limit her ability to think strategically about the country's direction.

The remarks followed a report by NXJI Research and questions from lawmaker Fumitake Fujita regarding the excessive time Japanese leaders spend in parliament compared to their counterparts in Britain and Germany. Takaichi, a self-described workaholic who reports sleeping only zero to four hours a night, has previously urged colleagues to work like workhorses.

Opposition lawmaker Yoshiko Kira criticized the comments, arguing that Takaichi is reinforcing outdated gender stereotypes and an unhealthy work culture. Conversely, supporters suggest the Prime Minister is highlighting the disproportionate domestic burdens women face in Japan, specifically regarding rigid grooming expectations known as midashinami.
