Donald Trump Shifts Midterm Strategy to Focus on Republican Base

President Donald Trump is prioritizing Republican strongholds over swing districts to drive base turnout ahead of the midterm elections.

President Donald Trump has altered his midterm campaign strategy, prioritizing visits to predominantly Republican states over the competitive swing districts he pledged to target in September. Although he previously promised to visit 35 competitive locations, he has campaigned with fewer than a third of those candidates, focusing instead on activating the base in states including Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Recent stops include Arizona, Montana, and Alaska, with a planned visit to Kansas for a toss-up Senate race. In North Carolina, Trump is scheduled to campaign in Greenville for Senate candidate Michael Whatley, even as campaign committees begin canceling advertisements for Whatley due to a slipping race. To incentivize voters, Trump is proposing a $5,000 dividend for every American adult if Republicans secure both the House and Senate, a plan that has met resistance from some elected Republicans.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters argues that the president's presence is essential to drive base turnout. Conversely, North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton claims the last-minute efforts will fail and may backfire on the Republican ticket.
