UK Warship Fires Live Rounds Amid Falklands Tensions
The HMS Medway conducted live-fire exercises off the Falkland Islands as Argentina's President Javier Milei threatens legal and economic action to recover the territory.
The British warship HMS Medway fired 120 live rounds from its 30mm automatic small calibre gun off the coast of the Falkland Islands on Monday. The exercise was part of a routine readiness operation following joint maneuvers between British soldiers and local reservists focused on practicing the recapture of the archipelago.
These military actions follow escalating tensions with Argentina. President Javier Milei has labeled the islands a national cause and claimed they are under illegal foreign occupation. Milei has already imposed sanctions on firms involved in oil exploration around the islands and threatened further legal and economic measures to recover the territory.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham responded by stating the UK will stand firm in the face of any threats. Additionally, the British UN delegation condemned Argentina's denial of the islanders' right to self-determination, describing such a stance as unacceptable behavior for a democracy.
