Trump Announces Non-Binding Trade Frameworks for Asia and Latin America

Donald Trump announced several frameworks for agreements with partners in Southeast Asia and Latin America. These arrangements are non-binding political agreements rather than finalized legal trade deals. While the administration recently removed tariffs on certain produce and coffee, businesses continue to face economic instability due to the government's pattern of abruptly changing tariff rates and expanding affected product categories.

In August, the administration added more than 400 items to steel and aluminum tariffs to prevent circumvention. These actions have led trade experts and business organizations to question the stability of the new frameworks. The National Foreign Trade Council warned that the agreements lack durability without the approval of Congress.

Further uncertainty stems from pending Supreme Court rulings on the legality of specific tariffs. Some analysts suggest these legal challenges may prompt foreign governments to suspend or renegotiate their deals with the United States.
