Ford CEO Urges U.S. Block on Chinese EV Imports

Ford CEO Jim Farley called for a ban on Chinese electric vehicle imports to prevent the devastation of domestic manufacturing.

Ford CEO Jim Farley urged the United States to block the import of Chinese electric vehicles, warning that allowing these cars into the domestic market would be devastating to U.S. manufacturing. Speaking on Fox News, Farley argued that heavily subsidized Chinese automakers, including BYD and Xiaomi, possess a production capacity exceeding 50 million vehicles annually, creating an unfair competitive environment for domestic brands.

Farley cited economic risks and national security concerns, specifically regarding the potential for data collection via vehicle cameras. To mitigate these risks, he advocated for maintaining 100% tariffs or requiring Chinese firms to enter joint ventures with U.S. companies. These concerns are shared by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno and a group of Democratic lawmakers.

President Donald Trump expressed a different approach, stating he is open to Chinese firms building factories within the U.S. provided they employ American workers. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company is developing new affordable electric vehicles in Kentucky to compete with the low-cost, high-feature offerings from Chinese manufacturers.
