Russia and Ukraine Launch Reciprocal Drone and Missile Strikes

The Military of Russia launched a series of coordinated strikes across 11 Ukrainian regions on August 13-14, 2026, targeting residential areas and critical infrastructure. In Kramatorsk and the village of Bilenke, eight guided aerial bomb strikes hit an apartment block, killing one person and wounding 15. In the Sumy region, two jet-powered drones struck a private residence in the Buryn community, killing a 29-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son. Additional strikes hit a roadway in Zaporizhzhia and military targets in Izmail and Mykolaiv.

Ukrainian forces responded with long-range drone strikes against Russian infrastructure. These attacks caused a fire at the Ust-Luga oil export port in the Leningrad region and damaged a Wildberries warehouse in the Tver region, which Ukraine alleges distributes dual-use military goods. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting 90 of the 112 Russian drones deployed during the wave of attacks.

The escalation extended into NATO airspace when fighter jets shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle over the Balvi region of Latvia. The Ministry of Defense of Latvia attributed the drone's entry to Russian electromagnetic warfare. In response to the regional instability, Finland temporarily restricted aviation and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland. These events follow a United Nations report stating that civilian deaths in Ukraine reached their highest monthly level in July since the early stages of the full-scale invasion.
