Mallikarjun Kharge Demands All-Party Meeting on Delimitation Proposals
Mallikarjun Kharge urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene an all-party meeting to discuss delimitation proposals and addressed an unprecedented delay in proroguing Parliament.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 16, 2026, demanding an immediate all-party meeting to discuss new delimitation proposals before they are finalized for Parliament. This marks the fourth such request from Kharge, following the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill on Delimitation to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026.
Kharge cautioned the Prime Minister against attempting to "bulldoze" far-reaching constitutional amendments through Parliament without sufficient deliberation among political parties and stakeholders. He also flagged an "unprecedented" scenario in which both Houses of Parliament have not been prorogued in the 64 days since the Monsoon Session adjourned sine die on August 13, 2026. Kharge noted that this delay fuels speculation that the government may reconvene Parliament suddenly to bypass standard notice periods for lawmakers.
Supporting these demands, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the government of acting arbitrarily and questioned why the administration is "scared" to convene a meeting. The Indian National Congress is seeking formal clarity on the status of the Monsoon Session and demanding sufficient lead time for regional stakeholders to examine draft bills to ensure parliamentary consensus.
