Opposition Leaders Accuse Modi Government of Dictatorship Amid Delhi Crackdown
Opposition leaders condemn the detention of hundreds of protesters and MPs in Delhi, with some predicting the collapse of the Modi government by early 2027.
Opposition leaders have accused the Indian government of establishing a dictatorship following a sweeping police crackdown in New Delhi on October 10. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, general secretary of the Congress party, stated that India is no longer a democracy and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah committed treason by colluding with the Election Commission to cheat in elections.
Delhi Police detained nearly 500 people to prevent them from reaching Jantar Mantar, including Cockroach Janta Party chief Abhijit Dipke, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, and CPM MP John Brittas. Authorities reportedly sealed the capital using internet cuts, barricades, and blockades that stranded 15,000 vehicles and halted trains. Opposition leaders described the detention of 254 MPs and the scale of the suppression as worse than the Emergency.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut characterized the unrest as a people's rebellion. He predicted that the central government would collapse by March or April 2027, asserting that a national government would be established in its place.
