Trump Defends Escalating Costs of Lincoln Memorial Pool Project
President Donald Trump defended the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation after costs jumped from $1.8 million to $13.1 million via a no-bid contract.
President Donald Trump defended the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after reports revealed costs climbed from an initial $1.8 million estimate to $13.1 million. The project, intended to prepare the site for the United States' 250th anniversary, includes waterproofing and painting the pool "American flag blue." Trump characterized the work as a sophisticated construction effort rather than a simple paint job, claiming the final result would eliminate leaks and "SPARKLE magnificently."
The U.S. Department of the Interior awarded the project to Atlantic Industrial Coatings through a no-bid contract, stating the price increase was necessary to expedite the timeline. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the arrangement as a "$13 million no-bid deal for his buddies."
Legal challenges have emerged as the Cultural Landscape Foundation and historian Charles A. Birnbaum filed a federal lawsuit to stop the renovations, alleging the work unlawfully alters a historic landmark without a required preservation review. The spending controversy coincides with broader scrutiny of Trump's construction projects, including a White House ballroom whose estimated cost has doubled to $400 million.
