US Governors and Global Missions Mark India's 80th Independence Day

Governors and local officials across the United States issued proclamations designating August 15, 2026, as India Day or India Independence Day to commemorate the nation's 80th anniversary of independence. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, led the primary celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi, focusing on the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram and the role of youth in achieving a developed India by 2047.

In the U.S., Governors Kathy Hochul of New York, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Matt Meyer of Delaware, Bob Ferguson of Washington, and Jim Pillen of Nebraska issued official declarations. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also designated the date as India Day. These proclamations recognized the Indian-American community's contributions to healthcare, technology, and civic life, while emphasizing shared democratic values. Celebrations included lighting the Empire State Building and the Space Needle in the colors of the Indian flag.

The Consulate General of India in Seattle announced proclamations in Washington and Nebraska, while consulates in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta hosted cultural workshops.
