Trump Administration Cuts 270,000 Federal Jobs via AI Automation

Donald Trump reduced the federal workforce by over 270,000 employees through aggressive AI automation and the launch of the America.gov digital gateway.

The administration of Donald Trump has reduced the federal workforce by more than 270,000 employees through a combination of hiring freezes, early retirements, and reductions in force. This downsizing follows a directive from the General Services Administration for federal agencies to eliminate, optimize, and automate their workflows. As part of this transition, the White House launched America.gov, an AI-powered digital gateway designed to handle citizen-government interactions.

Critics claim the shift replaces human bureaucratic oversight with automated systems that expand surveillance and decision-making power while decreasing accountability. These tensions extend to the private sector, where the United States Department of War designated the AI company Anthropic as a supply-chain risk. The designation followed Anthropic's decision to restrict its technology from being used for autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.

Concurrent reports highlight the risks of military AI integration. The military's AI-assisted targeting system, Maven, is linked to a February strike on a girls' elementary school in Minab, Iran. The attack killed over 150 people, an outcome attributed to the system's reliance on outdated intelligence.
