Andy Burnham Confirms Russian Interference in 2016 Brexit Referendum

Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 Brexit referendum, sparking a political clash over the legitimacy of the vote.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 Brexit referendum, making him the first British prime minister to publicly acknowledge such efforts. Speaking on the Rest Is Politics podcast, Burnham stated he received a clear answer that interference occurred after inquiring upon entering Number 10. He defended his comments as being clear-eyed about hostile actors and accused the Conservative Party of ignoring the issue for a decade.

MI5 Director General Ken McCallum acknowledged that Russian media outlets like RT and Sputnik were active and that interference was attempted via trolls and bots. However, McCallum urged the public not to exaggerate the impact, emphasizing a distinction between attempted interference and a swayed outcome. He warned against making adversaries look 10ft tall.

Burnham's admission sparked a confrontation at Prime Minister's Questions with Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused him of undermining the referendum result or compromising national security. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage dismissed the claims as a hoax and called the Prime Minister a liar. In response to the backlash, the government stated that Burnham absolutely accepts the referendum result, while No. 10 maintained that the interference did not influence the final outcome.
