John Fetterman Threatens to Leave Democratic Party Over Israel Stance

United States Senator John Fetterman has threatened to leave the Democratic Party if it officially adopts a platform opposing aid to Israel. Fetterman warned that he would defect if the party becomes an "anti-Israel party," a statement following a House vote where nearly half of Democratic representatives opposed such aid.

This ideological rift is accompanied by Fetterman's support for right-leaning policies, including Donald Trump's immigration crackdowns, judicial nominations, and the war in Iran. While Fetterman claims he votes with his party 93% of the time, he has criticized parts of the Democratic base as "anti-American" and currently polls better among Pennsylvania Republicans than Senator Dave McCormick.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged Fetterman to remain in the party, describing the Democratic caucus as a "big tent party" that can host diverse views. Conversely, Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that Republicans would "welcome" Fetterman should he decide to switch parties, noting that he has discussed the challenges Fetterman faces within his current caucus.

The internal U.S. political tension coincides with the Government of Israel defending its military conduct in Gaza, asserting that it has taken "unprecedented wartime measures to minimize harm to civilians while confronting Hamas."
