Ukraine and Germany Partner to Develop Ballistic Missile Defense
Ukraine and Germany signed an agreement to jointly develop the Freyja air defense system and produce Ukrainian-designed Termit unmanned ground vehicles in Germany.
Ukraine and Germany have established a defense partnership to develop the Freyja ground-based air defense system designed to intercept ballistic missiles. The agreement involves a collaboration between the Ukrainian company Fire Point, which serves as the prime contractor for system concepts and FP-7 missiles, and the German company Hensoldt, which will integrate the radar systems.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, announced the initiative during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, calling for international support to produce concrete results by winter 2026. While the memorandum of understanding was signed at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, reports differ on the finalization of the broader partnership, with some sources placing the event at NATO headquarters in Brussels and others at Ramstein, Germany.
Beyond air defense, the pact includes a commitment from Germany to finance the production of Ukrainian-designed Termit unmanned ground vehicles. These robotic systems will be manufactured within Germany for delivery to the Ukrainian Defense Forces to enhance operational capabilities.
