UK Defence Shares Surge as Burnham Pledges Spending Hike
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to raise defence spending to three per cent of national income by 2030, triggering a surge in aerospace and defence stocks.
Andy Burnham announced that the upcoming government Budget will establish a path for defence spending to reach three per cent of national income by 2030. The Prime Minister stated that national security is "at the top of the priority list."
Shares in several UK aerospace and defence firms surged on Monday following the news. Babcock International saw the highest gain at 6.4 per cent, followed by Rolls-Royce at 6.1 per cent, BAE Systems at 4.1 per cent, and Melrose Industries at 3.5 per cent.
The market activity follows a £5.9 billion government contract awarded to BAE Systems in July for the construction of Dreadnought-class submarines in Barrow. This programme supports approximately 30,000 jobs across the United Kingdom, including over 7,000 direct employees working on vessels such as HMS Dreadnought and HMS Valiant.
