Several Republican lawmakers and candidates in battleground states are urging Donald Trump to implement a ban on U.S. diesel exports to lower domestic energy costs. The push follows a surge in the national average diesel price to $6.53 per gallon, representing a nearly 75 percent increase since February.
Proponents of the ban, including Senator Chuck Grassley and Representative Tim Burchett, argue that domestic energy should prioritize American consumers to relieve financial burdens on families and farmers, especially amid the ongoing war in Iran. Governor Jeff Landry has specifically backed a 90-day export ban to support the U.S. economy.
President Trump stated his administration is exploring the option, but key cabinet members have rejected the proposal. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum argue that a blanket ban would not lower prices and could instead lead refiners to slow production.
