Trump Ignores Congress as Iran War Costs Surge
President Donald Trump continues Operation Epic Fury in Iran despite congressional resolutions to withdraw forces and rising economic costs for U.S. households.
The United States is seven months into Operation Epic Fury, a military conflict in Iran launched by Donald Trump in February 2026. The war has cost the U.S. government between $40 billion and $44 billion in direct military spending, leaving the administration facing a budget shortfall and seeking supplemental funding from Congress.
The conflict has caused a significant economic ripple effect within the United States. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates that surging gas and diesel prices have cost U.S. households and businesses over $103 billion as of late September, with that figure projected to reach $180 billion by the end of the year.
Despite these costs, President Trump has ignored resolutions passed by both the House and Senate directing the withdrawal of U.S. forces. In response, congressional opponents are considering using the power of the purse by refusing to pass the requested supplemental appropriations to pressure the administration to end the hostilities.
