USS George Washington Relieves USS Abraham Lincoln in Middle East

The USS George Washington replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East following a record-setting deployment marked by reports of deteriorating crew conditions.

The USS George Washington arrived in the Arabian Sea on August 19, 2026, to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is returning to San Diego after a 272-day deployment. The Lincoln spent over 250 uninterrupted days at sea supporting operations against Iran and enforcing a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. This rotation leaves the United States temporarily without a carrier strike group in Asia.

The relief comes amid allegations of dire living conditions aboard the Lincoln, including water contamination, moldy showers, food quality issues, and shortages of soap and hygiene products. Some reports and social media videos further alleged a mental health crisis involving suicide attempts. Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Richard Blumenthal, have demanded a formal inquiry and accountability from the Department of Defense.

Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed the reports as misrepresented, with Trump describing the ship as beautifully maintained and stating the deployment had not been nearly long enough. Admiral Brad Cooper of U.S. Central Command praised the crew's resilience and camaraderie, while the U.S. Navy denied any increase in suicidal ideation. Officials cited high crew reenlistment rates and noted that only a small number of mental health cases were treated with no loss of life.
