Nigeria Joins World Energy Council to Lead African Energy Policy

President Bola Tinubu announced Nigeria's formal admission as a National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC), a London-headquartered global network of over 100 countries. Tinubu described the move as a vote of confidence in Nigeria's energy reforms and stated the country joined the council "to lead, not just participate" to ensure African interests shape global decisions on energy security, equity, and sustainability.

To lead the new national committee, Tinubu appointed Abdulrazaq Isa as Chairman and Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer. The Federal Government pledged full support for WEC Nigeria, intending for it to serve as a neutral, technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue and investment mobilization.

Bala Wunti, who previously served as Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, will lead efforts to connect Nigeria to the council's international network. Wunti is tasked with bridging the gap between government, industry, investors, and academia to produce research on energy priorities. He emphasized that Nigeria's energy future must be grounded in the realities of security, affordability, and national development rather than ideology alone.
