U.S. Midterm Candidates Focus Campaigns on Cost of Living
U.S. midterm candidates from both parties are launching affordability tours as voters prioritize the cost of living and inflation in the upcoming elections.
Candidates in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections are centering their campaigns on affordability as voters rank the cost of living as a top priority. The economic climate is currently strained by high fuel prices linked to the Iran war and the expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Democrats frame the current economic situation as a crisis, linking price increases in groceries and gas to corporate greed and tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. To highlight these issues, candidates such as Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Annie Andrews in South Carolina are conducting campaign tours titled Make Stuff Cost Less and Gas, Grits and Groceries, respectively.
Republicans continue to attribute economic difficulties to the previous Biden administration. However, they face challenges regarding their own 2024 inflation promises and the impact of ongoing war. Republican nominee for governor in Florida, Byron Donalds, is countering Democratic narratives with a tour titled Defending the Florida Dream.
Both parties are proposing various solutions for housing, child care, and utilities. Key proposals include reforming bureaucratic permit processing for housing, suspending gas taxes, and debating whether renewable energy or natural gas is more effective for reducing electricity costs.
