Nigerian Officials Clash Over Tinubu's 2027 Re-election Prospects

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo declared that President Bola Tinubu's bid for re-election in 2027 will be "a coronation, not an election." Speaking on Channels Television, Keyamo asserted that demographic calculations and recent All Progressives Congress victories in Ekiti and the FCT municipal elections ensure the president's return. He dismissed the viability of opposition figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, claiming the ruling party's strategic organization leaves rivals far behind.

Opposition figures have responded with warnings and calls for resignation. Salihu Moh Lukman of the African Democratic Congress argued that while public dissatisfaction with economic policies exists, the opposition's failure to unify is actively securing another victory for the APC. Lukman noted that the selfish ambitions of various opposition leaders are repeating strategic blunders that prevent a cohesive challenge to the presidency.

Further criticism came from African Democratic Congress chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo, who urged President Tinubu to resign due to insecurity and poor governance, specifically citing massacres in Plateau and Benue. Okonkwo also criticized the president for defending the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission, alleging that Tinubu has morphed into a spokesperson for the commission. Additionally, Okonkwo accused the APC of attempting to use the judiciary to deregister opposition parties, referencing a recent Court of Appeal judgment that overturned a ruling to deregister the ADC.
