Shehbaz Sharif and Nikos Christodoulides Hold Diplomatic Talks in New York

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Nikos Christodoulides held a series of diplomatic engagements in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2026. Sharif focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, defense, and education through meetings with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah, Kenyan President William Ruto, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker.

In a separate meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Sharif reiterated Pakistan's support for Syria's sovereignty, unity, and political independence. The two leaders discussed increasing high-level institutional exchanges to boost investment and information technology, with Sharif expressing Pakistan's readiness to assist in Syria's economic recovery and reconstruction. They also discussed regional stability and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination under international law.

Simultaneously, President Nikos Christodoulides worked toward the resumption of negotiations regarding the Cyprus problem. He met with UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin and scheduled a meeting with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Christodoulides also participated in a climate change summit and held discussions with energy executives from ExxonMobil and Chevron.
