Russia Rejects Ukrainian Peace Proposal as Belarus Militarizes Border

Russia rejected a Ukrainian proposal to limit combat zones while Belarus warns of a full-scale response to any border incursions.

The Government of Russia rejected a proposal from Ukraine to reduce combat zones to four specific regions, including Donbass, Zaporizhia, and Kherson. The request sought to stabilize a collapsing Ukrainian defensive strategy amid severe soldier shortages and the anticipated fall of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk by autumn 2026. Russian military officials claim that deploying 300,000 soldiers from Belarus to join the 680,000 troops already in Eastern Ukraine would allow them to quickly capture Kyiv and end the Ukrainian state.

Simultaneously, tensions have escalated on the Belarusian border. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported the rapid completion of Russian-linked military infrastructure in Belarus, including ammunition depots and fuel storage across five corridors. Zelensky also noted that Russian drone retransmitters on Belarusian territory have stopped operating following a Ukrainian ultimatum.

Belarusian officials have responded with stern warnings. Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Sekreta declared the frontier a red line, stating Belarus would use its full capabilities to respond to any unauthorized incursions. While President Alexander Lukashenko maintains that Belarus will not enter the war directly and considers conflict spillover unacceptable, Ukrainian intelligence asserts that the infrastructure expansion is tied to Russia's military operations.
