Andy Burnham Announces Radical Overhaul of Youth Support Systems
Andy Burnham announced a radical restructuring of youth support to reduce the number of young adults on benefits and improve workforce integration.
Government official Andy Burnham announced a plan for "quite radical change" in the support system for young people to address the one million individuals currently not in work, education, or training. The initiative involves a "rethinking childhood" approach that begins in the early years to improve mental health support, school readiness, and job training.
Burnham stated he is prepared to make difficult decisions to end long-term benefit dependency, which he described as detrimental to young adults. This includes implementing tougher rules and limiting benefit access for those who refuse to engage with support services. While he expects an initial increase in spending on support services, he anticipates the overall benefits bill will decrease over time.
These policy goals align with a forthcoming second report by former minister Alan Milburn. The report is expected to recommend ambitious strategies to integrate young people into the workforce and reduce the number of inactive youth.
