Burnham and Healey Meet Business Leaders at Labour Conference

Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey met with corporate leaders at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool to repair relations with the business community. Business executives noted a shift toward a more optimistic and engaged government compared to the previous administration under Keir Starmer. However, leaders from the British Chambers of Commerce and the Rigby Group expressed significant concern over potential tax increases. They warned that firms are currently in a holding pattern, waiting to see if the government's engagement translates into supportive fiscal policy.

Shevaun Haviland of the British Chambers of Commerce cautioned that the government's growth strategy is unlikely to succeed while firms face a tsunami of rising costs from energy, employment, and business rates. Rain Newton-Smith of the Confederation of British Industry noted that the government faces difficult decisions in the upcoming budget.
