NAACP Sues to Protect Voter Data Seized in FBI Raid

The NAACP and other civil rights groups sued to prevent the Trump administration from misusing voter data seized by the FBI in Fulton County, Georgia.

The NAACP and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed a lawsuit and motion in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia to protect personal voter information. The legal action follows a January 28, 2026, FBI raid at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operations Center, where agents seized nearly 700 boxes of materials, including 2020 ballots, voter rolls, and electronic ballot images.

The plaintiffs argue the seizure breached privacy guarantees and interfered with voting rights. They are requesting a public inventory of the records and asking a judge to limit the government's use of the data strictly to the cited criminal investigation. Specifically, the groups seek to prohibit the use of the information for immigration enforcement, election administration, or voter roll maintenance.

The FBI investigation was initiated after a referral from Kurt Olsen, Donald Trump's director of election security and integrity. While the Trump administration characterizes the raid as an investigation into the 2020 election, critics argue it is an attempt to justify federal election takeovers. This action occurs as the United States Department of Justice simultaneously sues 23 states and the District of Columbia to obtain unredacted voter registration rolls, citing election security concerns.
