Donald Trump Blames Vandals for National Mall Grass Damage
President Donald Trump accused vandals of destroying grass on the National Mall, though evidence suggests the damage resulted from his July 4 celebration and extreme heat.
President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that vandals destroyed large patches of grass on the National Mall connecting the World War II Memorial and the Reflecting Pool. He cited markings of the numbers 86 and 47 as evidence of sabotage. However, webcam footage and photographs indicate the brown turf was revealed after the removal of infrastructure from a July 4 celebration hosted by Trump, which featured a large stage and crowds. Experts suggest the damage was caused by foot traffic and record-breaking heat of 103 degrees Fahrenheit.
This accusation follows a pattern of the president blaming vandals for renovation issues in Washington, D.C. Trump previously claimed vandals damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, but the United States Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro concluded the deterioration resulted from poor construction and hasty remodeling by Trump and his contractors. Trump criticized Pirro for these findings, stating she folded like an umbrella.
Separately, authorities arrested a woman for painting graffiti and filling a fountain with bubbles at the World War II Memorial. While Pirro brought felony charges in that case, charging documents do not mention the grass damage cited by the president.
