AI Hallucination Nearly Triggers US-China Conflict in Middle East
The United States military nearly intercepted a Chinese vessel after an AI chatbot incorrectly identified its cargo as nuclear weapons components during a conflict with Iran.
The United States military nearly initiated an armed conflict with China this spring after acting on a false intelligence report generated by an artificial intelligence chatbot. During an active conflict launched by President Donald Trump to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities, a special operations command analyst used generative AI to synthesize open-source and classified signals intelligence from Special Operations Command Pacific. The AI hallucinated that a Chinese vessel in the Middle East was transporting nuclear weapons components.
The analyst used the AI tool again to package these findings into a formal intelligence report, which was then circulated through classified Pentagon channels. Based on this inaccurate data, the U.S. military deployed aircraft and prepared armed personnel to board the ship. The operation was halted only after officials discovered the report was based on AI hallucinations and the intelligence was entirely false. One official stated the incident almost started a war.
This event follows a broader push by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to integrate AI into military operations through the GenAi.Mil platform and the Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Strategy. The Department of War previously awarded a $200 million contract to Google in July 2025 to support these AI solutions. While the incident has intensified debates over the need for tighter safeguards, President Donald Trump has opposed slowing AI development to ensure the United States maintains its technological leadership.
