Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike After Government Examination Reforms

Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day indefinite hunger strike on July 24, 2026, at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The decision followed written assurances from the Indian government regarding accountability for the NEET paper leak controversy and systemic reforms in competitive testing. Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh personally conveyed these promises, which include Parliamentary discussions on the failing examination system, compensation for families of students who committed suicide, and a pledge not to register cases against peaceful protesters.

In tandem with these negotiations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of a fast-track court at Rouse Avenue Court in New Delhi and the introduction of a draft Bill to impose stricter punishments for paper leaks. The government also appointed Naresh Pal Gangwar as the new Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. Modi urged Wangchuk to follow medical advice and regain his health.

Despite Wangchuk's decision to end his fast, the Cockroach Janta Party continues to lead protests at Jantar Mantar. The party is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and ₹1 crore in compensation for deceased aspirants. While government ministers met with party representatives at the Constitution Club of India on July 24, the party has called for further nationwide demonstrations. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police detained over 200 people in preventive custody to secure central Delhi, denying allegations that officers used stones or firearms during the unrest.
