Kemi Badenoch Proposes £10 Billion Britannia Shield Defense System

Kemi Badenoch and the Conservative Party (UK) proposed a £10 billion missile-and-drone defense system to protect the United Kingdom from Russian and Iranian threats.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch announced plans for Britannia Shield, a proposed £10 billion national missile-and-drone defense system designed to protect the United Kingdom, its sovereign territories, and overseas bases. Unveiled at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, the system is modeled after Israel's Iron Dome and would integrate radar, command-and-control systems, and interceptors to guard cities, power plants, and military bases.

Badenoch argued that the current Labour government is failing to guarantee national security, citing the transformation of warfare in Europe and the Middle East through the use of cheap weapons. The Conservatives propose funding the project and a broader pledge to spend 3% of GDP on defense by 2030 through cuts to welfare spending, including reforming housing benefits and reinstating the two-child benefit cap. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge described the initiative as one of the most significant military programs since the Cold War.

The proposal follows reports of minimal UK air defenses compared to allies, as well as recent Russian drone activity in Moldova and the withdrawal of US bombers from RAF Fairford due to Iranian threats. The Labour government rejected the proposal, citing the Conservatives' previous record in office. Prime Minister Andy Burnham asserted that his administration is already delivering sustained defense increases, including a £1 billion investment in air defenses and a target of 3.5% GDP spending by 2035.
