Kemi Badenoch Challenges Andy Burnham Over Cost-of-Living Spending

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch will deliver a speech in central London on Thursday to challenge Prime Minister Andy Burnham regarding the funding of his early policy initiatives. Badenoch characterizes the Prime Minister's recent measures—which include capping single journey bus fares in England at £2 and providing £40 of relief for six months by slashing VAT on energy bills—as a spending spree.

Badenoch argues that these caps shift financial burdens onto taxpayers, businesses, and families, offering only a limited response to the cost-of-living crisis. She intends to press the Prime Minister to rule out tax rises to pay for these programs. Additionally, she will urge the government to prioritize clean, cheap, and abundant energy by maximizing output from North Sea oil and gas fields.

Badenoch further contends that the Prime Minister must move beyond his previous perspective as the mayor of Manchester to lead the United Kingdom with greater ambition, suggesting that his current plans are insufficient for the national scale.
