Trump Launches AI Action Plan to Fast-Track Energy Production

The administration intends to grant categorical exclusions to data centers and has already reduced requirements for draft environmental impact statements. The White House Council on Environmental Quality further supported this shift by withdrawing guidance on the consideration of greenhouse gas emissions.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright described expanded natural gas production as the essential workhorse for winning the global AI race. While the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute criticized the existing permitting system as a national embarrassment, environmental advocates warn that these reforms threaten scientific integrity and community input. Some legal experts suggest that sidelining NEPA could increase litigation and paradoxically slow development by disrupting coordination with other environmental laws.
