Jeff Gundlach Criticizes Federal Reserve Quarter-Point Rate Hike
Jeff Gundlach criticized the Federal Reserve for raising interest rates by only a quarter point, arguing a larger hike was needed to combat inflation.
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday, a move that triggered a 700-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average during a press conference led by Chairman Kevin Warsh.
Jeff Gundlach, founder of DoubleLine, criticized the decision, arguing that a half-point hike was necessary to combat rising inflation. Gundlach noted that a larger increase would have aligned the Fed funds rate with the 2-year Treasury rate, which sat more than 100 basis points higher.
Gundlach described Chairman Warsh's communication during the press conference as opaque and thin. He further dismissed Warsh's proposal to use task forces to evaluate the central bank's operations, comparing the strategy to a struggling company hiring consultants to hear what they want to hear.
