India to Source 25% of LPG Imports from US

The Government of India plans to source up to 25% of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports from the United States in 2027. This strategic shift aims to reduce dependence on the Middle East following severe shortages earlier this year caused by the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

State refiners Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum are expected to issue tenders for these supplies within two months and will dispatch a delegation to the United States next month. The move is part of a broader pledge to increase U.S. energy purchases by $10 billion to $25 billion, helping India narrow its trade surplus to meet a key demand of President Donald Trump.

Junior Oil Minister Suresh Gopi informed lawmakers that the diversification is intended to ensure supply security and mitigate risks arising from regional disruptions or geopolitical events.
