IMF Committee Warns of Global Risks in Bangkok Meeting
The International Monetary and Financial Committee called for increased support for debt-vulnerable nations while warning that escalating conflicts and trade tensions threaten global food security.
The International Monetary and Financial Committee called for increased financial support for nations facing short-term financing challenges caused by high energy prices and the spillovers of war. In a statement issued following a meeting in Bangkok, the committee warned that global economic risks remain tilted to the downside, noting that escalating conflicts and trade tensions could disrupt critical trade routes and worsen food and energy security.
Member economies agreed to prioritize assistance for conflict-affected states and low-income or vulnerable middle-income countries that are actively implementing reforms to address debt vulnerabilities. The committee also noted that while advanced intelligence technologies have boosted trade and investment, they carry risks that could amplify macro-financial vulnerabilities.
The final statement avoided the term artificial intelligence. This occurred despite efforts by the United States government to include the term super intelligence, a preference of President Donald Trump.
